Sourcing strategy

Harvests do not line up with demand. Most of what we do well comes down to knowing when a crop is ready somewhere else.

Trading the seasons

Counter-seasonal cotton

Tanzania harvests cotton in July and August. India harvests in November to January. We supplied Tanzanian cotton into India from September through January, covering the months before the local crop arrived and staying in place while it came in. The same logic applies to cereals, pulses and other seasonal crops grown in the southern hemisphere of Africa.

Thiraya supplies

Tanzania's crop reaches Indian mills in the months before India's own arrives — and keeps covering them while it comes in.

Hopping for continuity

Cashew, all year round

We source cashew from three origins on different harvest cycles: Benin from February to April, Guinea-Bissau from May to August, and Tanzania from October to January. Coordinated by one team, they cover every month of the year but September.

Choosing the origin

Single-origin Uganda

We source vanilla from a single origin — the Lake Victoria region of Uganda. Two harvests a year, a major season in summer and a secondary one in winter, bring beans to buyers fresher than a once-a-year crop allows. And at that altitude the bean matures slowly on the vine, building a naturally richer flavour.

Windows are indicative. Uganda's two seasons are declared each year by the Ministry of Agriculture so beans are picked at peak ripeness; Madagascar's single harvest typically runs June–August.
